How Does the Image to ICO Converter Work?

Browsers do not natively export the `.ico` file format, but the official ICO specification allows embedded PNG bitmap data. This tool processes your image entirely in your browser using HTML5 Canvas, automatically center-crops it into a square, scales it smoothly to your selected dimensions, and packages the binary data following standard ICO file headers (ICONDIR and ICONDIRENTRY).

When selecting multiple sizes, each resolution is converted into an independent .ico file and bundled into a clean ZIP archive for batch downloading. Everything runs in-memory on your device with zero server latency.

Tip: All ICO icons have a 1:1 square aspect ratio. Non-square source images are cropped from the center to prevent image distortion. PNG and SVG transparency channels are fully preserved.

What is the difference between Single Size and Multi-Size mode?

Single Size mode generates one .ico file at the specified dimension and downloads it immediately. Multi-Size mode allows you to check multiple resolutions, generating individual icons packaged into a single ZIP archive.

What happens if my original image is not square?

Standard ICO icons require a 1:1 square ratio. The converter will center-crop the largest possible square from your original picture before scaling. For optimal composition, uploading a pre-cropped square image is recommended.

Will transparent backgrounds be preserved?

Yes. Our encoder wraps 32-bit PNG data with full alpha transparency. Transparent areas from PNG, SVG, and WebP images remain 100% transparent in the output ICO.
